I wrote a monologue for Play Date, an event that kicked off Playful Substance’s 2023-2024 season. As described:
In this opening monologue of Our Idiot Hero or the Trial of Christopher Columbus we meet Cristobal Columbo! (Oh, Christopher Columbus, scuzi) played by Patrick Michael Valley. Cris is spending his afterlife on an island full of natural beauty but clearly not as rich or as “civilized” as Marco Polo had described. Through Amanda Faye Lacson’s hilarious text we meet a preening, egotistical Columbus who is struggling to maintain his legacy as the statues and monuments to his achievements crumble around him.
The event’s theme was “3 monologues 3 ways”: so along with my monologue, we got to see monologues by Donald Wollner and Tori Barron, each directed and shifted by Dan Renkin. Hearing the audience response and listening to the different interpretations of the piece makes me excited to get back to the page and develop more (Disco Marco Polo, anyone?)!
