Savoring the Spring

This year, more than any other, I’ve been enraptured with the cherry blossoms and other blooms in New York City. I remember hearing a story about how in Japan, when cherry blossoms are at peak bloom, work and school shut down so people can go outside and savor them (looking it up, the current tradition hanami is to have parties under the cherry trees). The cherry blossoms are only here for a mere moment. They burst, pink and gorgeous and full, and almost as quickly, shed their leaves, pink and white snowflakes littering the ground.

Sometimes I’m able to capture them on my trusty Nikon D750, my big camera, the serious-looking one. Most times though, I’m with my 2-year-old, and can’t set up a shot and watch him at the same time. In those times I’ll grab my iPhone out of my fanny pack (yup, one of those moms) and snap what I can, blithely using portrait mode and 0.5x for more drama.

I used to think I wouldn’t share the iPhone pictures, that I wasn’t a serious photographer when I used my phone. But sometimes you’ve got to capture the moment, savor it while it lasts.
